We often hear that our children are the Church of the future. This vision may inspire optimism and seem promising in terms of leadership and influence, but it is also limiting. I am firmly convinced that children are the Church of the present, and they can, and indeed must, be a source of blessing to the present.
We are not only called to prepare them for the future, but we are also called, by God’s commission, to turn their attention to the present. For this reason, we must have the vision that Jesus had, and a heart like his: in the midst of the most important task in human history, the salvation of the world, and in God’s resulting plan of action, Jesus was able to set aside time to bless children, and even made it a priority. Children may be a source of noise or a burden to some, or a waste of time for others who are too busy, or who may think it’s too early to have children. But in God’s eyes, nothing is more important than them. What many consider to be for tomorrow, God declares to be for today. Welcoming children, giving them importance, engaging in open and heartfelt dialogue with them, teaching them, and investing in them requires a special and comprehensive program. This involves more than simply telling them stories or teaching them how to live a life of faith. We must inspire them to become believers, to live according to the truth, and to discover what God wants to accomplish in their lives today. To reap the best harvest, we must sow the best seeds—this is no secret.
We must not forget that we are not teaching them lessons, a message, or a program. The Lord Jesus never did this. Instead, He taught everyone present and thus adapted to them—the crowds, the disciples, and others. Similarly, teaching children requires us to adapt to them by using specific language, a particular style of speaking, an appropriate story, a suitable scripture passage, the truth we wish to convey, and by being mindful of the time spent delivering the message, etc. They, in turn, must learn how to draw closer to the Lord Jesus.
